Staff from a Hull based insurance broker are backing a bid to help local people with sight loss.
The team from Hinks Insurance are supporting Sight Support Hull and East Yorkshire in their application to the Aviva Community Fund, which gives local groups and organisations from across the UK the chance to pitch for funding.
Sight Support Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY) is appealing to supporters to submit votes via the Aviva Community Fund to enable the charity to win a bid for funding for its vital home visiting service.
“When a person is diagnosed with sight loss, their emotional and information needs can be significant,” says Sight Support HEY’s Services Manager Alison Stannard. “We are often told that receiving the news is a ‘devastating’, ‘shattering’ or life changing event so it is critical that people receive satisfactory health and social care at this critical time of diagnosis.”
“People can feel as if no-one understands what they are going through which can lead to depressive thoughts and a sense of exclusion and may lead individuals to withdraw from social activities and interactions.”
If successful in its bid, the charity wants to use the funding towards its Home Visiting Service which aims to arrange a visit from a Community Advice Officer to an individuals who has been newly diagnosed within two weeks of referral to the charity.
“This very personalised service which allows us to quickly provide crucial advice on a variety of topics ranging from specialist equipment to support and assistance on benefit entitlement and accessing appropriate benefits and care packages,” explains Alison. “We can also provide emotional support to anyone with mental health challenges resulting from a diagnosis of sight loss.”
Every year Sight Support HEY’s team of five Community Advice Officers undertake around 3,500 such visits, each costing approximately £65 to the charity but which are FREE to the person with sight loss.
People like Mr Robinson, "Thanks so much for helping me, I feel so much better. I just needed some answers and some reassurance, someone to listen to me.”
