A community fitness initiative led by Katie Fountain of Gymophobics in Hessle is bringing people together this June with an inspiring goal: building up to completing 100 squats a day by the end of the month.
More than 60 members and supporters have already signed up to take part in the “Squat Challenge,” demonstrating fantastic community spirit and commitment to improving their health and wellbeing, while raising vital funds for Sight Support Hull & East Yorkshire (SSHEY).
Participants will gradually increase their daily squat count throughout June, developing strength, stamina, and confidence along the way. As well as boosting overall fitness, the challenge highlights the importance of lower body strength in maintaining independence and preventing falls, an especially important factor as people age. Strong legs and improved balance can significantly reduce the risk of falls, helping individuals stay active and safe for longer.
Katie Fountain, who organised the challenge, said she was inspired to support Sight Support HEY after learning about the charity’s work through a friend. She wanted to create something inclusive, accessible, and motivating for the members.
“The gym ladies have really got behind it, and I’m absolutely delighted with the uptake,” said Katie. “It’s been brilliant to see everyone getting involved in something that not only supports their own health but also raises funds for such an important local cause.”
Katie is going even further in her fundraising efforts, taking on additional personal challenges this year, including Total Warrior in June and the Great North Run in September, all in support of Sight Support HEY.
Alison Stannard, CEO of Sight Support HEY, praised the initiative and the community behind it:
“We are incredibly grateful to Katie and everyone at Gymophobics Hessle for their enthusiasm and support. Initiatives like this make a real difference, helping us continue our work supporting people with sight loss across our region. I’ve been so inspired by the commitment shown that I’ve decided to take part myself!”
Funds raised will go towards providing vital services for people living with sight loss, helping them maintain independence, confidence, and connection within their communities.
