Tom Skinner from Beverley is attempting his toughest challenge yet by running 44 miles in under 20 hours to raise funds for local sight loss charity Sight Support Hull & East Yorkshire (HEY).
The race known as the Hardwolds 40 follows the Hudson Way from Beverley to pick up the Wolds Way just outside of Goodmanham. The route continues to follow the Wolds Way passing through chalk landscapes, Market Towns & ancient villages such as Londesborough, Millington, Thixendale & the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy, all before leaving the Wolds Way near Settrington Beacon & descending into Settrington to pick up the Centenary Way to Malton & the race finish.
Tom is registered is partially sighted due a sight condition called Nystagmus which he has had since birth as well been shorted sighted. Married with a young family and a full time job with the Halifax Bank, Tom has undertaken many challenges over recent years for Sight Support HEY including cycling, running and swimming. He’s also taken part in an abseil down the K2 building in Hull, a simulated helicopter crash into water and the Three Peaks Challenge. He also took on the task of running 1000 miles in 2020 despite the additional challenges posed by Covid lockdowns.
“It’s a personal challenge for me but it’s also a great chance to raise funds to help Sight Support provide help and support to others”, explains Tom.
Sight Support’s Fundraising Manager, Angela Gregory says: “We are so grateful for Tom’s continued support. He is such an inspirational role model for anyone with sight loss. We’d also like to thank the Halifax Bank who often kindly match Tom’s fundraising efforts through the company’s Matched Giving Scheme”.
The money raised money will help Sight Support HEY to provide information and emotional support through its experienced staff, resource centre, booklets, support groups and information sessions as well as social and leisure opportunities and so it really will make a difference to the lives of many local people who are blind or partially sighted.
